The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, Ind., one of the nation’s few
remaining two-newspaper towns, seeks a copy editor to join its universal
copy desk. Strong copy-editing and headline-writing skills are a must.
The universal desk handles copy for all sections of The Journal Gazette,
including news, sports, features, business and editorials. The Journal
Gazette, a seven-day, locally owned morning newspaper, is in a long-term
joint operating agreement with a six-day afternoon Knight Ridder
newspaper. The Journal Gazette’s circulation is 72,000 daily and 125,000
Sundays. Candidates must have a degree in journalism or related field,
and at least some copy editing experience at a daily newspaper through
internships or at student newspapers. Mid-career copy editors are also
encouraged to apply. Design skills are a plus, but are not a requirement
for the job. The newspaper also has a separate universal design desk.
Fort Wayne is about 3 hours from Chicago and Columbus, and two hours
from Indianapolis. Those interested may contact Assistant News Editor
Anne Gregory, The Journal Gazette, 600 W. Main St., Fort Wayne, IN
46802, or via e-mail at agregory@jg.net.
