PHILADELPHIA: Asst chief of Buro for AP
The Associated Press seeks an Assistant Chief of Bureau for Philadelphia.
This person works as part of senior management in Pennsylvania to
help direct news, human resources, marketing and administrative
functions. The ACOB has direct responsibility for specific functions
of the operation, including marketing to colleges and long-range news
planning. The ACOB prepares for future managerial responsibilities,
including chief of bureau. With the bureau chief, this person
provides day-to-day leadership and management of 40 editorial
staffers, promotes the AP with 84 newspaper members, 200 broadcast
members and professional organizations, and manages administrative
operations. The ACOB assumes control of operations in bureau chief’s
absence.
This person helps draft and monitor statewide news goals and sets
tone for aggressive news coverage. The ACOB audits the print and
broadcast reports, and plays a leadership role in news, enterprise
and project planning meetings. This person has primary responsibility
for creating multimedia elements of news report.
This manager helps plan and direct long-term enterprise news report,
including projects and investigative journalism, in conjunction with
other state managers and national editors.
This person plays a key role in marketing, sales and member
relations. This person also visits and markets services to members,
identifying potential new products and gathering marketing
intelligence. The ACOB communicates new services to members through
newsletters, e-mail and promotional materials. This person attends
PAPME board meetings, coordinates the annual PAPME contest and helps
organize PAPME-sponsored meetings and events. This person has primary
responsibility for marketing to colleges and college newspapers.
This manager oversees personnel matters, promoting diversity through
recruiting and hiring; disciplinary issues; annual appraisals;
identifying and arranging staff training; writing and updating staff
manuals and staff emergency guides; implementing company policy
regarding staff safety; and reviewing and approving electronic
timesheets.
The ACOB works with data center to set up, implement and oversee the
gathering and dissemination of election returns.
This person shares the workload for other administrative functions, including reviewing expenses and signing checks in the COB’s absence;
reviewing and approving stringer credits, and budget planning and
control. This person also works with senior managers to maintain
relationships with other AP departments.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence as a manager,
with experience reporting, writing and editing. This person must be
able to recognize and develop newsworthy stories, work accurately
under deadline pressure, communicate effectively, motivate staff and
be efficient with time and paperwork. Candidates must have the
ability to recognize opportunities to improve and enhance bureau
operations, with a focus on audio, video and online. Applicants
should have a minimum of three to five years of supervisory
experience in the industry.
