NJ: AME/Editorial Page Editor for The Bergen Record
The Record (Bergen County, NJ) has an opening for an Assistant
Managing Editor/Editorial Page Editor.
Major duties are:
· Leading a department of nine, including a deputy, several
editorial writers and columnists and a cartoonist, and providing
appropriate feedback that improves their skills and upholds the
highest journalistic standards.
· Setting the agenda for public discourse in North Jersey as
well as New Jersey by providing readers, through our editorial pages,
with the insight and information they need to make reasoned and sound
decisions.
· Ensuring that our editorial pages reflect diverse viewpoints,
take contrary arguments into account, promote lively expression of
opinion and foster understanding and the public good.
· Heading the newsroom’s Ethics Committee and convene it, as
necessary, to consider journalistic questions and to keep our Ethics
Policy up-to-date.
· Advising the editor as part of his management team.
· Meeting and communicating with the public and community and
government leaders.
The successful candidate must have a proven track record leading
newspaper editorial pages and an editorial/opinion page staff. We
are looking for someone who is innovative, strident about their work,
willing to stick out his or her neck and savvy about multimedia and
new ways of engaging the public and drawing in readers or viewers, no
matter what the platform.

The Record, with a circulation of about 150,000 daily and 200,000
Sunday, is family-owned and located in North Jersey, just 15 miles
away from the heart of Times Square in Manhattan and a short drive
from the shore and the mountains. It has won the “General Excellence
Award” as New Jersey’s best daily newspaper nine of the past 13
years. Just recently, the newspaper won the 2005 “IRE Medal,” the
highest honor bestowed by the Investigative Reporters and Editors for
investigative reporting.
