JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Web Intern
Internship time period: 9/14/07 – 12/14/07
FLSA Status: Part-time (20 hrs/week), Non-Exempt
Reports to: Senior Producer
Department: In The Loop
Location: St. Paul, MN
Position Summary:
The Minnesota Public Radio show “In The Loop” needs an intern with a strong technical background and a creative spirit to help bring its episodes alive on its web site, and help the show communicate with its listening community. In The Loop will begin its first weekly season in the fall, and the Web Intern will be crucial to helping the show present a polished and easy-to-navigate online presence. Qualified candidates must have excellent writing skills, have a strong photojournalistic sense, and be fluent in Web production standards and tools (including HTML and Photoshop). The Web Intern will do most of the hands-on work of updating the web site, with guidance from the show’s Editor and Web Master.
Position Responsibility:
* Update the show’s web site regularly with information about upcoming shows and other announcements of interest to listeners
* Create web pages archiving each week’s show in an inviting and easy-to-use way
* Create Web graphics as needed (banners, illustrative graphics, promotional images, etc.)
* Process photos for use in the live show taping slideshow
* Convert and upload the show’s podcast and other audio files
* Update the show’s weekly podcast feed
* Communicate regularly with other show staff about material that will need to be presented on the web site
* Suggest and implement creative ways to present extra web-only material
* Edits and adapts radio script copy, when needed, for text on the web
* Provide information for MPR Communications staff to update online event listings for MPR events
* Communicate with MPR Online News Editors as needed
* Troubleshoot technical problems with the web site or podcast, and work with the Web Master and/or MPR’s New Media department to resolve them.
* Contribute story ideas and other suggestions as part of general show editorial process
* Other duties as assigned
Required Education and Experience:
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required
* 1-2 years experience in online news production or equivalent education
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
* Proficiency in HTML and CSS
* Excellent language skills, including writing, editing, and proofreading
* Strong Photoshop skills and a good photojournalistic sense
* Good research and organizational skills
* Ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines
* Ability to work efficiently with limited direct supervision
* Consistent and reliable attendance is an essential component of the job
* Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues
* Ability to maintain productive and positive communication with co-workers
Preferred Skills and Experience:
* Experience with digital photography
* Experience creating features with with Flash
* Experience with JavaScript, mySQL, and other languages helpful but not necessary
* Journalism experience or education
* Knowledge of “AP” Style
* Experience with blogging or other community-based online features
