Job Description:
Weekly Reader’s Current Health 1 is an
eight-time-a-year, 32-page classroom periodical aimed
at students in grades 4 through 8. We are seeking an
energetic editor to for this periodical as well as for
its accompanying teacher’s guide.

The editor of Current Health 1 works with the Managing
Editor — and collaborates with the editor of Current
Health 2 — to plan, write, and edit articles that will
inform and excite tween and teen students about
health, safety, and nutrition.

Responsibilities:
• Conceive, assign, write and edit Current Health 1
magazine.
• Work with art and editorial team to plan 8 yearly
issues, and deliver material on time and within budget
• Generate and develop exciting, current story ideas
and teaching strategies that are appropriate for the
target audience.
• Research and write features, departments, teacher’s
guide, and Web content.
• Work with freelance writers.
• Write and edit an 8-page teacher’s guide to
accompany each issue, including lesson plans and
reproducible activities.

Qualifications:
• Undergraduate degree in journalism/creative writing
or related fields.
• Minimum 3-4 years in
publishing/writing/editing
/journalism.
• Background in education (particularly middle-level
education) is a strong plus.
• Experience with health and fitness content is a
strong plus.
• Able to communicate complex issues in lively, clear,
and concise prose.
• Expertise in writing methodology and pedagogy
necessary, as well as the ability to present material
in a tween-friendly fashion.
• Familiarity with tween interests and culture
• Able to work quickly and meet short deadlines.
• Comfortable working in a collaborative team
environment.
• Knowledge of a Mac platform and Microsoft Word and
Quark XPress.
