The Associated Press seeks an aggressive reporter to cover government
corruption and immigration issues in New Jersey.

After orientation to AP operations in the state, would be part of the
team covering corruption, immigration and other top news in the region
through accurate, aggressive and thorough reporting, strong and
compelling writing and precise editing.

In the past five years, more than 100 New Jersey elected officials have
been convicted of betraying the public’s trust, and AP is seeking a
reporter to complement existing staffing on this beat. The successful
candidate will excel at investigative and accountability journalism, and
have a record of aggressive and successful source-building and using
documents and public records to break news.

This reporter also would devote time to delving into issues arising from
immigration in New Jersey. As the nation’s most ethnically and racially
diverse state, New Jersey is dealing with a host of immigration issues
ranging from health care, housing, law enforcement and education to
resident’s responses to diverse communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Language skills (especially Spanish), an ability to explain complex
issues and understanding of all facets of city, county, state and
federal government will be necessary. The ability to file stories
quickly and cleanly, to juggle multiple priorities and to work as part
of a team also is essential. This position is based in Trenton, the
state capital, but will require frequent travel to pursue the corruption
and immigration beats in all parts of the state.
