NEWSPAPER DESIGN DIRECTOR
amNewYork is looking to hire a design director who will bring creativity, innovation and energy to the paper. If you do not have at least 5 years’ experience working at a newspaper or a magazine laying out EDITORIAL CONTENT please to not apply.
The director is responsible for the visual presentation, design management, creative direction and brand stewardship of the paper. Candidates must have top-notch technical and managerial skills and be adept at marrying editorial content with design. The design director reports to the editor in chief of amNewYork and supervises three designers.
Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced newsroom, designing and helping other staffers produce a visually-gripping newspaper – from up-front news pages to back-of-the-book feature sections.
In addition to keeping pace with the demands of the (Monday-Friday) daily, this candidate should continually be working on improving the overall look and feel of the paper. Candidates should have innovative ideas for keeping the paper fresh and for integrating the print product with our Web site, amNY.com. Creative design of Web icons, blog postings and user-generated content are some of the director’s duties.
The director also is responsible for the quality of the production and printing process. Candidates must be expert in QuarkXpress, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and be able to teach others these programs.
The director also must be a flexible, fast-thinking multi-tasker, who will work Sunday-Thursday, from about noon until 8 p.m. or so.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee production/design of news pages, feature sections and special sections. Daily hands-on layout and design of the front page and some inside pages. Supervise two designers. Preserve, promote and enhance the amNew York brand. Oversee print quality/reproduction. Work with the online staff to coordinate art/design issues. PDF/prepress, Quark/Photoshop/Illustrator troubleshooting. Photo/graphics editing, selection and color correction.
REQUIRMENTS: At least 5 years’ experience working at a newspaper, wire service or news magazine. At least 2 years’ management experience. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in graphic arts. Journalism training is a plus. Familiarity with New York City also is a plus.

REPORTER
amNewYork is looking to hire an energetic, self-starter who can break news and thrive in a fast-paced workplace.
The candidate must have 3-4 years experience working at a daily newspaper or wire service covering crime, courts, transportation, education or government news. This person must be able to write daily stories on deadline and also produce longer, cover stories and projects. The candidate also must feed breaking stories to the online staff and contribute to amNY.com’s blogs and multimedia efforts.
Duties:
•Write clear, accurate, well-crafted news and feature stories on deadline.
• Develop and initiate projects including in-depth features, investigative reports and analytical pieces.
• Make arrangements for photos, videos, graphics and other supplemental publication material for the paper and Web site.
Requirements/Qualifications:
• 3-4 years experience working at a daily newspaper or wire service covering hard news.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
•Ability to break news, cultivate sources and generate sharp stories ideas.
• Familiarity with New York City.
• A bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field.
• Ability to use and understand a broad base of information systems, including news wires, data banks of governmental agencies and private organizations, and various other research materials.
• Knowledge of Quark, PhotoShop, video shooting and editing skills a plus.
