ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Brian Lehrer Show, the much-acclaimed news and public affairs program on WNYC Radio seeks a Producer to join a tremendously creative staff that serves a passionate, diverse audience and produces an unparalleled product.
The producer is responsible for developing story ideas for editorial content in regular editorial meetings and expected to take the story from conception to completion including determining show guests; thoroughly researching topics to best prep the program host and regular contributors on topic; creating ways to keep the discussion vital over the course of the program (not just a defined “segment”) and producing unique material on the show’s website – and everything else in between.
Reporting to the Executive Producer, the Producer must be open to creative thinking, team effort, and have strong communication skills and high energy. Strong writing skills, fearlessness in pursuit of information, an inquisitive and active mind, and an ability to work in a tightly-knit team are required.
Working closely with the host and other staff to determine content and present the news, both on the air and across additional platforms (web, video, text, etc), the Producer must be a self-starter and to keep up with a wide variety of news sources; be able to think and act quickly; and thrive in a collaborative, deadline-driven work environment.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to
§ Work in collaborative team to create a compelling program every day
§ Develop story ideas for daily talk show
§ Develop show’s sound and perspective in collaboration with other stakeholders
§ Determine who are best guests and secure them for the show
§ Produce Web-specific content for the program and develop strategies for interactive program components
§ Other responsibilities as needed
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or satisfactory equivalent is required
3-5 years full time professional experience in a rigorous, media or research driven environment, or satisfactory equivalent is required
Must have strong news judgment and interviewing skills
Requires ability to prioritize and handle several projects at once
Demonstrated research/investigative journalistic skills required
Requires demonstrated ability to conceive and manage idea or project from start to completion
Requires demonstrated ability to influence others and collaborate with a creative team
Demonstrated ability to conceive and manage idea or project from start to completion
Excellent critical thinking skills that demonstrate independent judgment and decision making
Must have ability to take initiative to pursue story ideas
Requires ability to bring a strategic vision and to see news stories as interrelated and help draw out common areas
Excellent verbal and written communication skills is required

Experience running a daily talk show is preferred
Prior supervisory experience preferred
Print or Broadcast journalism experience; radio listener (public and commercial) preferred
Requires ability to bend, reach, push, pull, sit, walk, write, type, speak, hear, and see
Ability to work extended hours as needed, including some evenings and weekends, and to be on-call for emergencies is required
