Job Title: NY 1 News- News Researcher
SUMMARY
Is responsible for assisting Assignment Editor in researching, verifying and bringing news stories on air. Strong researching and communication skills and ability to multi-task a must.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
News Research
• Researches story data, summarizes and enters data into PC.
• Maintains PC data files and keeps them up to date as new information develops.
• Is available to staff on an as needed basis to provide research information.
• Keeps up to date on current events through various sources, such as media, newspapers, radio, etc.
• Confirms news stories by researching and calling sources, interviewing and verifying information.
• Listens to fire, police, EMS scanners, and is able to interpret codes and notify desk of breaking news.
• Provides up-to-date information to Assignment Desk on breaking stories or other story information in data bank.

Staff Support
• Assists Assignment Editor by researching new information, keeping editor up to date with new developments, confirming stories and updating records.
• Assists reporters by setting up and scheduling interviews and providing details of interview including directions to interview location.
• Assists producers and writers by keeping them up to date on developing stories and changing information.
• Answers phone lines, screens calls and identifies potential stories.

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Education: Bachelors Degree Required.
Experience: At least 1 year of experience working on an Assignment Desk.

Job Title: NY1 News - News Assistant (Freelance)

SUMMARY
Responsible for going out in the field to shoot video and sound bites, to interview and obtain information in order to accurately and thoroughly report a story, and assist the reporters.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Video
• Shoots appropriate video and sound bites
• Checks equipment and notify ENG of equipment problems.

News Gathering
• Conducts interviews
• Gathers information.
• Determines best way to shoot the story
• Requires traveling to story location
• Driver’s License required
• Assists the news truck
• Assists reporters

Reports to Assignment Desk
• Relays information in the field back to the station
• Coordinates with assignment desk and producer.
• Logs in information and enters information into computer.
• Supports assignment editors
• Trains interns in the field

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Education: College Degree with a major in journalism or communication preferred or equivalent experience.
Experience: 1-2 experience in news gathering or related field.
