JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Radio Program Director
Grade Level: N
FLSA Status: Full-time, Exempt
Reports to: Director, Regional News
Department: Minnesota Public Radio
Location: St Paul, Minnesota
Position Summary:
The Radio Program Director provides vision and daily oversight for the “sound and stationality” of KNOW-FM and its regional radio network. The Radio Program Director reports to the Director, Regional News, with specific responsibility for establishing and managing the overall sound of the service, ensuring the sound supports and reflects the vitality and depth of the daily news service and for achieving annual and long-term public service goals.
Position Responsibility:
Oversee development and execution of new regional news programs and segments.
Manage and direct the news shows’ production staff.
Ensure the work of the MPR News technical director constantly aligns with NIS needs.
Support show hosts through coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and on-going feedback.
Oversee air checking of on-air staff.
Support MPR News’ efforts on the web and collaborate with leaders of MPR.org to determine best use of Web audio streams.
Oversee programming, execution and audience metrics on NIS HD stream. .
Encourage creativity, invention and risk-taking in radio production to attract “the next generation” listener.
Develop work flow for podcast production of news segments and programs.
Develop work flow for audio transfer to web site.
Oversee choices and use of all music used in NIS show production.
Embrace diversity in the composition of MPR’s on-air staff.
Align job responsibilities and staff skills to maximize effectiveness.
Support Director in vetting options for and shaping station’s content.
Scan producers for programming that would grow NIS audiences.
Serve as a first point of contact for producers and others who are pitching content for the station.
Help create regional broadcast and on-line streams to serve new public radio audiences.
Coordinate programming for on-air fundraisers.
Help build and manage the program schedule for MPR’s regional news and information service.
Develop and manage the training process for all on-air staff.
Lead the professional development of on-air staff through systematic “coaching” of hosts, announcers and reporters, while working collaboratively with their managers and supervisors.
Foster a creative and productive work environment. Create development opportunities for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.
Oversee News’ process for promo production.
Create and manage promotional schedules in conjunction with Marketing, maximizing opportunities for revenue generation, effective cross-promotion and audience development.
Suggest and support live broadcast events.
Help ensure that operating budget goals are met.
Propose and achieve measurable internal success criteria for the sound on NIS.
Work collegially with leaders from other MPR and APM divisions, especially those involved in marketing, fundraising and underwriting sales efforts.
Stay current on audience research and trends.
Stay abreast of innovations in delivery systems and new distribution platforms in order to maintain industry-leading technical systems and processes.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required.
Significant broadcasting leadership experience, ideally in the top 20 media markets in the U.S.
Broad background preferred in public affairs, news, or a related public service arena
Management experience is required - must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead.

Preferred Skills and Experience:
Experience and success with on-air fund-raising and revenue development preferred.
On-air experience highly desirable
