Business News Editors
These editors are in key positions on the Business News editing desk,
part of a team that delivers everything from the first word of breaking
news to online readers to final versions sent to print and online
audiences. These newspersons edit stories on a wide scope of business
events, including quarterly earnings, acquisitions, restructurings and
regulatory actions. These editors also at times monitor company press
release wires and assign stories to writers.
The successful candidate will be adept at quickly shaping stories that
are informative and smart, analytical and forward looking, sensible and
easy to comprehend. These editors will also at times be asked to take
charge of one of the biggest stories of the day - an important earnings
announcement, a key executive appointment or a blockbuster M&A deal -
and help the reporter fashion it to illuminate for online and print
readers why the news is important and how it affects their lives.

QUALIFICATIONS
The right candidate will have editing experience across a range of
industries, from media/entertainment to retailing to technology. The
ideal candidate should be also able to craft copy into tight, clear
stories, and to work under intense deadline pressure. Candidates should
have the ability to effectively manage copy flow. Applicants should be
able to produce copy that meets AP’s high standards for accuracy,
balance, clarity and context. Familiarity with corporate regulatory
filings is essential. Some experience with data terminals such as
Thomson ONE is a plus. Candidates must have at least five years of daily
editing experience. Three years of financial news experience is
preferred. Good communications skills and familiarity with a team
approach to work is essential.

Entertainment Editor
The Associated Press seeks an experienced Entertainment Editor for its
New York City headquarters to lead cross-platform coverage of
entertainment and celebrities, and compete aggressively on breaking,
high-impact and exclusive news.

This person will manage a global staff of text reporters and editors and
work closely with five managers who oversee entertainment content across
text, photos, audio and video. The editor will work with staff to direct
coverage and develop exclusive and original editorial content with an
emphasis on multimedia products that involve all the formats. This
person will work closely with editorial counterparts in sports, business
and news.

QUALIFICATIONS

Excellent news judgment and experience thinking creatively about how to
produce competitive content are essential. Candidates must have strong
communication and collaboration skills; the ability and desire to learn
and deploy new storytelling techniques; deftness to handle multiple
tasks and deadlines at once; commitment to high standards in all aspects
of news coverage, administration and leadership; and must be a
self-starter who also has strong experience managing a team. The ideal
candidate will have several years of experience managing coverage with a
team. Applicants must have a passion for arts, culture and entertainment
and solid reporting, writing and editing skills. This candidate must be
knowledgeable about celebrity news and all aspects of arts and
entertainment on a global level. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
combination of education and experience are required.

Health Care Reporter
This newsperson reports and writes breaking news and enterprise stories
for The Associated Press’ national business report, with a focus on
pharmaceutical, hospital and health-insurance companies and other
health-related business issues. This reporter develops industry sources
with an eye toward reporting events and trends before others do in a
highly competitive coverage area. This newsperson works with writers and
editors in the Business News Department in New York and in domestic and
international bureaus to leverage AP’s global presence. This person
sometimes edits and files copy for AP’s national report, and coordinates
coverage plans with Photos, Multimedia, Graphics and Broadcast
Departments.

QUALIFICATIONS

The job requires a minimum of three years of experience as a reporter,
writer or editor, with experience writing and editing spot news and
enterprise. Knowledge about drug and health insurance companies,
hospitals and health care policy is strongly preferred, including
experience covering major executives at these companies.
The job requires solid news judgment and communications skills plus
familiarity with a team approach to news coverage. The ideal candidate
will have a proven ability to develop sources and break news and a
demonstrated ability to write both spot and project news stories with
flair. Applicants must be able to craft compelling leads and produce
highly readable stories appropriate for a general global audience. He or
she must be able to make snap decisions under intense deadline pressure
and in a highly competitive news arena. Candidates must be able to
quickly write and edit copy to meet AP’s standards for accuracy and
balance, as well as style and grammar.
