Associate Editor:
amNewYork is looking to hire an associate editor responsible for the paper’s travel, dining, eating well and career sections. This editor must gather content (stories, photos and multimedia) from freelancers and the wires; write stories, captions, headlines and Web icons; and lay out pages. Solid news judgment and the ability to think creatively about how to produce smart content, present stories and drive coverage is essential. The editor also must be flexible and collegial in working with the amNY.com staff and assisting other print news editors with their pages when necessary. The hours are: Sunday through Thursday from about 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., but flexibility is essential as is knowledge of InDesign. New York City residency is a plus. DUTIES: · Smart, innovative daily and long-term planning for the sections. · Identify stories, photos and graphics from staff, wires and freelancers. · Report/write original stories. · Work on occasional original projects · Design sharp pages in InDesign on daily deadline · Write headlines and captions. · Oversee freelancers, assign stories and edit copy. · Maintain dining, travel, careers and eating well pages. The candidate must have 3-4 years experience working at a daily newspaper or wire service covering crime, courts, transportation, education or government news. This person must be able to write daily stories on deadline and also produce longer, cover stories and projects. The candidate also must feed breaking stories to the online staff and contribute to amNY.com¹s blogs and multimedia efforts.
Duties:
Write clear, accurate, well-crafted news and feature stories on deadline. Develop and initiate projects including in-depth features, investigative reports and analytical pieces. Make arrangements for photos, videos, graphics and other supplemental publication material for the paper and Web site.
Requirements/Qualifications:
3-4 years experience working at a daily newspaper or wire service covering hard news. Excellent writing and communication skills. Ability to break news, cultivate sources and generate sharp stories ideas. Familiarity with New York City. A bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field. Ability to use and understand a broad base of information systems, including news wires, data banks of governmental agencies and private organizations, and various other research materials. Knowledge of Quark, PhotoShop, video shooting and editing skills a plus.
