The COB provides leadership and management of news, marketing and administrative operations in New York state, a territory that excludes New York City and Long Island. The COB leads staff in producing a multimedia report that is essential to AP subscribers both in the region and globally. These artists produce graphics for a new financial and data content product that AP is developing for newspapers and their Web sites. The new product, called Money & Markets, will replace or supplement traditional newspaper stock tables. Content will be pegged to breaking financial, economic and company news. Content will make heavy use of explanatory graphics. The goal of Money & Markets will be to inform readers about markets news and trends and help them make investment decisions. Artists would work closely with other departments, including multimedia, and join in developing a cross-platform standard for sharing complex art and media files.

The successful candidate must have knowledge of the financial markets and the economy. Experience producing business and financial graphics is a plus. Applicants must be critical thinkers who can produce graphics coverage of financial news that is explanatory and analytical. Candidates should have tested news judgment, an objective understanding of the news, a strong sense of design and a deep understanding of math, statistics and economic reports. The successful applicant will join a 12-person desk that helps produce a section that emphasizes staff-written coverage of regional business. Business staffers and the entire section have been honored by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the National Press Foundation, The Associated Press and the Texas Headliners, among others.

The job entails laying out the section on some days and copy editing on others. Applicants should have strong skills in both areas. At least three years of professional newspaper experience is preferred. Experience editing business copy is a plus, as is experience on the CCI pagination system. But the most important attributes are copy-editing excellence and a willingness to learn about business journalism.

Editors on the Business Copy Desk are expected to write enticing, insightful headlines; combine a high level of copy-editing skill with an understanding of business coverage; and demonstrate a talent for inviting and informative page design.
