We are currently accepting applications for Fall 2009 and Spring 2010. Email a self-revealing cover letter, resume, and two writing samples to editorial.tikkun@gmail.com. In your cover letter, please indicate which type of magazine internship is your top choice and explain why you are capable of doing first-rate work in this capacity. If we are interested in your application, we will contact you and ask you to complete an additional assignment related to the type of internship for which we are considering you. No phone calls, please.

A description of positions follows. Please note that interns may be periodically pulled away from the jobs outlined below to help with special projects initiated by Michael Lerner.

PRINT EDITORIAL interns gain hands-on experience in magazine editing, evaluating submissions and proofing each issue of the magazine. EThey also read articles from past issues of Tikkun and summarize these pieces in short “teasers” that are published as part of the magazine’s online archive. Editorial interns may have the opportunity to publish an article, but we make no guarantees—interns’ submissions are subjected to the same strict standards as any other submissions to the magazine. Editorial interns with strong writing skills and professionalism will be asked to write monthly profiles of artists for our multimedia blog site, Tikkun Daily.

WEB EDITORIALinterns at Tikkun scour the blogosphere for posts to which they think Tikkun’s daily site should respond. They play a central role in finding and managing the content on the magazine’s new multimedia blog site, Tikkun Daily. Editorial interns with strong writing skills and professionalism will be asked to write monthly profiles of artists for our multimedia blog site, Tikkun Daily. Those Web interns who are familiar enough with the magazine to have fully grasped its worldview and who demonstrate outstanding reporting and writing skills may eventually be invited to blog regularly, as well.

PUBLISHING interns work with the magazine’s editorial and business staff to analyze the magazine’s subscriptions, newsstand sales, and sale of ads. They also help craft and execute new business plans for the magazine. This internship is an opportunity for students interested in publishing, marketing, business, and sales to gain experience in project management and creative problem solving.

GENERAL MAGAZINE OUTREACH/PUBLICITY interns spread awareness about Tikkun and its unique offerings by engaging in substantive conversations with print/radio/television journalists, bloggers, professors, and members of the general public who may not yet be aware of the magazine. They write letters to the editor, send professional outreach emails, and make phone calls to public intellectuals. They also attend lectures, political events, cultural events, and media conferences to hand out back issues of the magazine and solicit subscribers. ONLINE MAGAZINE OUTREACH/PUBLICITY interns are additionally in charge of updating content about the magazine on numerous social networking sites and bookmarking articles by Tikkun’s authors and editors using Delicious.

ART interns work on our national magazine and on our website, generating illustration ideas and conducting image research, to find images that are not only artistically strong but also have social content. Interns with strong art skills may also be encouraged to try their hand at creating original illustrations to be considered for publication in the magazine.

Footnoted.org is a popular blog that looks at the things publicly traded
companies try to bury in their routine SEC filings. The blog, edited by
award-winning business journalist Michelle Leder has been named a Top 10
business blog by BusinessWeek, CNN/Money, and the Financial Times. It was
also named a “blog for those in-the-know” by the Wall Street Journal and in
August 2006, was named one of Time magazine “50 coolest websites.”

I am looking for an intern with strong writing and investigative skills who
can help me gather material for the blog by reading various SEC filings,
including 10Ks, 10Qs and proxy statements. To do this, you need to be
naturally inquisitive and have an eye for small details. You should ?also be
reasonably comfortable working with numbers. Think of a cross between Brenda
Starr and Warren Buffet. Though I’m based in New York, I’m open to any
intern who is comfortable working remotely and communicating via email.
Strong writing are also important because you will have a chance to post
items to the blog, which is routinely mentioned in The Wall Street Journal,
New York Times and other newspapers and magazines.

Hours are flexible, but I’m looking for a commitment of at least 8 hours a
week. This is an unpaid internship, with the exception of a small stipend to
cover expenses. In addition to learning unique skills, the intern will
receive credit on the blog. Contact Michelle Leder at ml[at]footnoted.org

many simultaneous projects and demands. This is a new job and the board and
officers, i.e. the bosses, will, in many instances, be learning as much as the
intern is. We see this as more than a job, and in the same breath, not quite a
job. A dedication and commitment to SAJA and its principles and mission is
imperative. You won’t be doing this for the money, because we acknowledge we
aren’t offering much. But we don’t expect or want a gopher, either. Ideally, we
would take on a student that leaves an indelible imprint not just on this new
position, but also the association as a whole.

In return, you will learn a lot about journalism, the journalism business,
networking and make terrific contacts in - and out of - SAJA.

The following list of tasks is just an initial guideline. You should have many
ideas of your own on what this new position is. In future years, we will
consider folks not based in NYC, but for this initial year, we would like to
have an intern based in or around NYC so she/he can access the Columbia
J-school facilities.

The basics:
— Starts Nov. 15, 2005 for a three-month trial period, with the
possibility of being extended through Aug. 2006.
— Must be current college or grad school student at start of internship,
can graduate any time during the internship, and continue thereafter,
up to a six-month period.
— A 10- to 15-hour a week commitment with at least half of
them during the course of the regular workweek. (Work and hours will
intensify for a two-week period before and during the convention,
typically in June or July. 2006 dates: July 13-16 in NYC)
— Comes with a $2,000 per semester scholarship (Comes with a $500 scholarship
for the initial three-month trial, starting Nov. 15).
— Reports directly to SAJA President, Vice President and Administrator;
frequent interaction with SAJA’s treasurer and secretary and other board
members.
— Some of the work can be done from home; but we will have a cubicle at
Columbia J-school that the intern is expected to use and keep up.
— Knowledge of Word, Excel required. Knowledge of desktop publishing, web
design, use of web forms, etc., preferred.

Writing/journalism tasks:
— Write a monthly Q&A with editors, reporters, recruiters, and other for the
students list. Subjects could include tips on landing the right internships
with Joe Grimm, making the best of a mentor’s wisdom, etc.
— Write or coordinate profiles of SAJA members in the news, i.e. the new
publisher in New Jersey, someone who has just had a groundbreaking story
published or aired.
— update and maintain web-based SAJA guides and resources like freelance forum
and the stylebook.

Organizational tasks:
— Check SAJA voicemail
— Field SAJA e-mails, replying to queries and directing correspondences to
board members
— Create and maintain a fund raising database; make sure sponsors get periodic
e-mails with updates crafted for them
— Make basic updates to the Web site re. moves, press releases, etc.
— Send out announcements that go out to the wide membership/SAJA friends
— Create and maintain a volunteer database, which would identify people’s
strengths/interests

Convention related tasks:
— Coordinate the volunteers and be on hand (along with a board member) to
supervise them
— Correspond on basic setup details with Columbia and other partners
— Reach out to hotel partner(s) to make sure rooms are available and allocated
for speakers
— Arrange couch program
— Take care of nametags
