The first is an associate editor position, covering all aspects of the busy

Editor/copy editor, NYC-area (nearby-ish)August 9, 2006 12:54 pm

We are looking for a person of many talents. We need someone who has some
traditional copy editing skills (spelling, punctuation, grammar) and who can
write headlines.
The QuarkXpress skills need to be at least strong enough to handle the
editorial and op-ed pages (which are heavily formatted and therefore
shouldn’t present too many difficulties.)
We are also hoping to use this part-time position to develop some web
content, so it is important that the applicants be conversant in Dreamweaver
and Flash.
Thus, we are hoping to find someone with the ability to design both
compelling news pages as well as dynamic content for the web.
The best candidate will have the ability to arrange stories, graphics,
photos and multimedia content for rep-am.com.
We are hoping this position will grow into full-time. For now, it is 25
hours (so we presume the person will do some freelancing, which is fine as
long as it is not for a direct competitor). Starting pay would be $17 to $19
an hour. Candidates should send their resume to Jonathan Kellogg, executive editor, at
jkellogg [at] rep-am.com.

It seems to me the person will have to be based in Connecticut, given that
we publish seven days a week.

FILM BACKGROUND:
The documentary explores the creative journey of
screenwriter Sooni Taraporevala (MISSISSIPPI MASALA, SALAAM
BOMBAY, and upcoming THE NAMESAKE), also a professional
photographer whose images of her own religious community,
India’s Parsi Zoroastrians, for over 20 years, led to a
coffee table book. http://www.soonitaraporevala.com

Taraporevala’s words and images have influenced many, yet
she remains publicly invisible. Quietly crossing
boundaries when few women of color made it in the film
industry, and long before “South Asian American” was a
phrase, and breaking thematic taboos, Taraporevala, a
“medium for ordinary lives,” has silently inspired a new
generation of filmmakers and artists.

The existing 18-minute documentary was commissioned and
shown several years ago for a gala event honoring
Taraporevala,. The film, weaving Taraporevala’s words with
longtime friend and collaborator Mira Nair and others,
incorporates film clips and Taraporevala’s professional
photographs. The project was shelved pending additional
interview footage, but was revived recently. The current
Editor, who has to step down due to schedule restraints,
will remain on board as a consultant/supervisor. The goal
is to keep flavor of original piece, but restructure with
additional footage, to short broadcast length.
Taraporevala’s next film, THE NAMESAKE, directed by Mira
Nair, will be released early November. We hope to have a
short rough cut section of the documentary ready by late
October, and finish the film soon after.
