Strong communication skills to articulate vision and values of the Center.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience supervising staff and budgetary oversight. Two years of additional experience teaching courses related to journalism and/or media literacy. Two years of additional experience as a working journalist. Fundraising experience. Experience creating and/or maintaining a Web site; presenting or creating news reports on the Internet; developing curriculum.

Responsibilities & Requirements: Stony Brook University’s Center for News Literacy, an innovative Center committed to teaching the principles of News Literacy to University and High School students across the country, is seeking an experienced, high-energy candidate to head the Center. Currently, the Center sponsors an undergraduate course across all academic disciplines on how to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports. Several thousand Stony Brook University undergraduates have completed the course. The successful candidate will direct the program, which includes supervising lecturers, recitation instructors, and graduate News Fellows. The candidate also will develop new curriculum materials and share best practices with other Universities. Additionally, the candidate will lead efforts to develop a News Literacy curriculum for high schools, oversee a teacher training program, and oversee the Center’s Web site. The candidate will identify fundraising opportunities, develop strategic partnerships, and help two- year- old Center evolve into a national and international clearinghouse, resource Center, and catalyst for the study, teaching, and practice of News Literacy. The candidate will report to the Dean of Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism where the Center is housed.

Special Notes: Anticipated start date: Fall 2009.

The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.

Computer-Assisted Reporting Specialist - The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is seeking an aggressive, skilled Computer-Assisted Reporting specialist to work with reporters and editors throughout the newsroom on CAR dailies and projects. The specialist will work as part of a CAR team on database acquisition and analysis, mapping, training of newsroom staff and development of intranet Web pages for use by reporters. At the Sun-Sentinel, CAR has been an important part of the newsroom for more than 18 years. Our CAR staff works closely with reporters and editors on news stories, from the initial planning stages to the end product. CAR specialists frequently receive bylines. The ideal candidate will be fluent with Microsoft Excel, Access, SQL and ArcGIS and have at least two years experience in CAR work. Web development skills considered a plus. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

News Research
• Researches story data, summarizes and enters data into PC.
• Maintains PC data files and keeps them up to date as new information develops.
• Is available to staff on an as needed basis to provide research information.
• Keeps up to date on current events through various sources, such as media, newspapers, radio, etc.
• Confirms news stories by researching and calling sources, interviewing and verifying information.
• Listens to fire, police, EMS scanners, and is able to interpret codes and notify desk of breaking news.
• Provides up-to-date information to Assignment Desk on breaking stories or other story information in data bank.

Staff Support
• Assists Assignment Editor by researching new information, keeping editor up to date with new developments, confirming stories and updating records.
• Assists reporters by setting up and scheduling interviews and providing details of interview including directions to interview location.
• Assists producers and writers by keeping them up to date on developing stories and changing information.
• Answers phone lines, screens calls and identifies potential stories.
