About NY1 News
NY1 News is Time Warner’s 24-hour newschannel in New York City. NY1 covers the city’s five boroughs with more than 40 full-time reporters.
NY1 signed on in the fall of 1992 from its newsroom on Manhattan’s West 42nd Street. As it approached its tenth anniversary, the station moved into a new state-of-the-art facility in the historic Chelsea Market building in January of 2002. With an integrated, all-digital production system and more than 600 hours of computer-based video storage, the facility represents one of the most advanced newsgathering operations in the world.
SUMMARY: Responsible for going out in the field to shoot video and sound bites, to interview and obtain information in order to accurately and thoroughly report a story, and assist the reporters.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Video
• Shoots appropriate video and sound bites
• Checks equipment and notify ENG of equipment problems.
News Gathering
• Conducts interviews
• Gathers information.
• Determines best way to shoot the story
• Requires traveling to story location
• Driver’s License required
• Assists the news truck
• Assists reporters
Reports to Assignment Desk
• Relays information in the field back to the station
• Coordinates with assignment desk and producer.
• Logs in information and enters information into computer.
• Supports assignment editors
• Trains interns in the field
Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
College Degree with a major in journalism or communication preferred or equivalent experience.
EXPERIENCE
1-2 experience in news gathering or related field.

Reporting
• Strong News judgment

• Gathers and verifies factual information regarding stories through interviews, observation, and research.
• Organizes material, determines emphasis, and writes stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
• Develops sources and contacts for story development.
• Make decisive and accurate judgments for story and personal safety.
• May also be asked to write vosots for anchors
Camera and Field Operations
• Shoots video to illustrate stories.
• Edits videos for broadcast.
• Drives to News locations
• Checks and maintains equipment
Presentation Skills
• Appears on television program when conducting taped or filmed interviews or narration.
• Gives live reports from site of event or mobile broadcast unit.
• Occasionally represents station at other events.
Preparation
• Strong knowledge of NYC, politics, events and history.
• Ability to cover breaking news for 24 hour news cycle.

EDUCATION
Bachelors Degree, preferably in Journalism/Communication /English or related field. General Liberal Arts is acceptable.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 1-2 years journalism experience; preferably prior on air experience.

• Insures that all necessary elements in packages and newscasts are delivered in a timely fashion.
• Evaluates resources needed for adequate coverage.
• Plans major coverage as to not interrupt daily news coverage.
